Most people don't really think about it because the car is new and shiny, they think the paint will stay like that forever. The reality is, that isn't true. Most car owners tend to make some pretty big mistakes when taking care of their cars paint, some of these mistakes aren't their fault. That's why I'm here to tell you some of the 3 biggest things to avoid to keep your cars paint looking good for as long as possible.
Using a Automatic Car Wash Automatic car washes have become a nation wide phenomenon, people like to just take their car into their local brown bear and make it look good again. The problem with these automatic car washes is that they pick up a lot of dirt through out the day from other cars and they end up dragging all that dirt across your paint in the process of cleaning . Those big brushes are already aggressive as they use a lot of power to make them spin and the material isn't very soft. If you were to take a brand new car through the automatic car wash you would instantly see the difference side by side on the paint. These kinds of car washes will destroy your paint over time and remove or wear down any waxes or sealants that was on your paint to begin with. We recommend 3 ways to wash your car instead of the automatic car wash. One way is to take it to a professional auto detailer, second is to wash your car yourself, and third is to take it to a touch less car wash. Now the best option will also be to take it to a professional, but feel free to experiment and see what's best for your situation. Using the wrong Techniques or Tools A lot of times when people wash their own cars by themselves, they tend to use the wrong kinds of techniques or tools that end up ruining their paint over time. A lot of times people will do things like using sponges when washing a car, dish detergent, washing the car in circular motions instead of straight lines, or even using a bath towel to dry their car. The problem with these kinds washing methods is that they will ruin your paint or cause micro scratches. Using a car wash sponge can damage the paint because the sponge material is very aggressive and your paint is soft, so it ends up damaging the clear coat. Dish detergent can remove any waxes or sealant that your paint may have and this will allow the UV rays from the sun to damage your paint. Washing the car in circular motions can cause swirls because your dragging dirt all over the paint, and using a bath towel is terrible because the towel material just simply isn't soft enough and most times it wont even dry your car properly. All in all you should be very careful of how your wash your car and you should do some research or have a professional detailer wash it for you. Placing Objects on your car People tend to place a lot of objects on top of their cars and tend to lean on them as well. The problem with this is that if you want to keep your paint job pristine, you want to avoid placing objects on the car as sometimes the bottoms of coffee cups which in most cases are plastic which will cause micro scratches on the paint when you drag the cup towards you. Leaning on the vehicle can also damage the paint as sometimes people tend to have belts of metal objects on them, which can definitely leave micro scratches or even deeper scratches that will be too big to remove or repair. Do you dry your car with a bath towel? Usually when people wash their cars on their own, they tend to dry their car with a bath towel. What people don't realize is that this kind of towel can scratch the paint on your car. They cause micro scratching. These kinds of scratches tend to get worse over time and they will make your paint look old and hazy. Not only will these bath towels damage your paint, they won't even dry your car properly. Usually you have to use multiple bath towels and that won't even do much. What you want to do is get yourself a professional auto detailing drying towel.
There are all kinds of professional auto detailing towels, but the most effective ones are the twist loop microfiber towels. A brand I personally recommend is Auto Fiber. These towels are the best for drying a car as they can dry a whole car by themselves and they won't scratch your car because they are made of softer material. If you want to take your car drying a step further, you can also use something like a drying aid. For example, a spray wax or a quick detailer which you can get at your local auto parts store. You would spray the panel with your drying aid and then dry the panel. This drying aid will help dry the car quicker and provide lubrication to minimize scratching if there was any dirt left on the paint from the washing process. All in All these steps should help you get a nice, dry car with some good added shine. Dog hair inside of your car interior can be a real pain to get out of the carpets and seats . Pet hair isn't so easy to remove with a simple vacuuming and requires specials tools and products in order to remove the dog hair properly. Especially when your dealing with carpet that isn't as high quality.
In order to start to remove hair you are going to need 2 things a vacuum, and a pet hair remover. You can find pet hair removers online and even order some on amazon. Typically the most common pet hair removers like the Lilly Brush tend to be the most common they have plastic ends that drag the pet hair out of the carpets, these pet hair removers can be very affective, but when it comes to carpet that is lower quality you might want to get some like a pet stone. These are more aggressive but they are effective, you should also be careful with the pet stone as it can damage to the carpet if not used properly and should only be used in worst case scenarios. After you have acquired your vacuum and pet hair remover of choice you will start by vacuuming up all the large debris and trying to get rid of as most pet hair as possible with the vacuum. Once you have completed your vacuuming you will use you pet hair remover to drag all the pet hair into one single pile and vacuum it up. You can break this part into sections and make multiple piles if your vehicle has a lot of pet hair. In some cases if you don't have much pet hair you might be able to get away with spray like a quick detailer on the carpet or some sort of spray that will add static to remove the dog hair. All in all you don't need much tool to remove pet hair in the proper way but you will need experience as it can be hard to remove pet hair from tight areas, in this case I would also recommend hiring a professional detailer as they tend to have more tools and experience and if you don't want to spend the time doing it your self it can be much more convenient epically when they offer mobile detailing as well. 1.Vacuum 2.Carpet Cleaner (or some interior cleaner with vinegar) 3.Microfiber towels 4.Extractor (if you have one) 5.Brushes to scrub the carpet After you have assembled all of your tools and products the first thing you are going to do is start by removing any lose debris or big chunks of salt that might still be on the carpet. You also want to remove your floormats and do this same cleaning process to both the floormats and the carpets in your vehicle. Once you have removed all loose debris you will start the vacuuming process, you want to make sure to vacuum as thoroughly as possible with the vacuum, and try and get the most out with the first vacuum. Once you have completed the vacuuming process you will start by either getting your carpet solution in a spray bottle, or some interior cleaner with vinegar and spray it into the carpets generously. Make sure to spray on the entire carpet and emphasis the salt stains. Once you have done this you will grab your brushes and lightly agitate the carpets to work your cleaning solutions into the carpet. If the stains have gone away after this then the last step would be to vacuum up the carpet one last time and you should be set. If their are still stains after this the next step would be to use an extractor. This extractor would ensure that all the salt in the carpets would come up and there would be nothing left in the carpets. After you have extracted the carpets all you need to do is pat the carpet dry with some towels and let them dry. The thing is an extractor can cost anywhere from $200-$2,000 dollars. If you wouldn't like to spend this much money and time I would recommend hiring a professional car detailer to deal with your vehicle. It can be cheaper to hire a professional as the already have all the equipment and experience to get rid of the stains, this will also save you time and money. All in All if you aren't dealing with stains that aren't that bad you should be able to get them out yourself. Either way you are in the right place to learn about how to properly wax your car. First thing I am going to tell you is that you are going to need quite a bit of time to actually do this correctly. First step in waxing your car is giving it a good wash. Now don't even think about putting your car through the car wash. You can just wash it your self, and you can even check our some of our other blogs to learn how to properly wash your car. After you have properly washed your vehicle you are going to need to perform a claybar treatment to your vehicle. The claybar treatment is going to insure to provide a good surface for the wax to bond with the paint.
After this you are going to have to get your self a nice paste wax. We recommend brands like Meguiars, or Jescar. You can also get your self a nice wax at your local auto parts store and it wont cost you much. The wax will typically last anywhere from 2-3 months and make sure to pick one with a good amount of gloss to insure that you get the best results for your vehicle. Once you have gotten your wax of choice you are going to need, some nice plush microfiber towels, and a wax applicator. You will start to apply the wax on to the car panel by panel, you will grab your paste wax and apply a few drop to the applicator pad and apply it to the car in circular motions. After you have applied the wax to all of your paint you will wait about 5-15 minutes depending on the product you are using and buff it off. Once you have buffed off your wax with a microfiber towel you should have a nice shiny car ready to hit the road again.
Then you're going to find your dirty wheel and spray it down with water. You will start by rinsing it and getting all the dirt and debris off the wheel and making sure to get all the dirt and debris off of the wheel well. After you have rinsed you will start by spraying your dedicated wheel cleaner on the tires and scrub down the tire with your stiff tire brush, after you have made sure to thoroughly clean the tire you will then move on to the rims. You will spray your dedicated wheel cleaner on the rim and inside the wheel barrel, you will start by cleaning the inner barrel and use your inner barrel brush to clean in there using a back and forth and side to side motion. Once you have cleaned the inner barrel you will move on to the face of the rim and clean it using your soft bristle brushes making sure to clean the entire wheel and get into all the details. Once you have done that you will also clean the wheel well with your barrel brush using your wheel cleaner. After you have finished all these steps you will rinse the rims and tires making sure to rinse away all of the brake dust and soap. If the wheel is still dirty you might have to repeat the cleaning process again, if your rims are still heavily dirty then I would recommend buying a wheel cleaner that has acid in it. You will repeat the cleaning process with this chemical making sure to not work in direct sunlight and not letting the chemical stay on the rims for too long. You will have to rinse multiple times through out the cleaning process making sure that the acid doesn't damage the wheel. After this you should have a nice clean, brand new looking wheel. The last step is to dry the wheel and tires and apply your tire shine of choice.

Usually a car gets full of mold when there is excess moisture in the vehicle that hasn't had a chance to fully dry. Now don't be scared and think that the car is too far gone because in the detailing world, no car is too far gone.
First step in removing mold from an interior is you will need some tools. You will need a steamer, shampoo/extraction machine, vacuum, carpet shampoo, interior detailer, brushes, and some microfiber towels. After you have acquired all of these tools you will start by vacuuming the interior and getting rid of any debris. You then will start to steam the carpets and seats to kill the mold and you will also apply your carpet shampoo, agitate the shampoo into the fabric with the steamer and then start to extract the carpets and seats with your shampoo machine. You will want to repeat these steps until the carpets and seats are stain free and there is nothing, but clear water coming up from fabric. You can also use your vacuum to suck up the excess shampoo and water, but a shampoo machine is recommended for optimum results. After you have steamed, shampooed, and removed the mold from the carpets and seats, you will use your steamer and interior detail simultaneously to clean the plastic in the vehicle and remove the mold from them. Be careful to not damage any material in the vehicle with the steamer and be careful with using it, as it can cause damage if not used correctly. After you have made sure that the car is free of any mold the carpets and seats may still be damp, you will want to make sure to let them dry by cracking the windows and letting them dry over night. You can also get a car fan and use them to speed up the drying process. After you have made sure that there is no excess moisture in the vehicle you should now have a nice, clean car that is ready to hit the road again! Why you should hire a professional? An Engine Bay cleaning/ detail can be intimidating for some people. People are skeptical about it because they're worried about getting the engine wet and cause damage to the engine. I'm going to tell you how you can detail and clean an engine bay the right way, to prevent any damage to your engine and keep it looking clean. A couple tools that you will need to detail your engine bay is a Pressure washer with low PSI or a hose, a degreaser , detail brushes , and some microfiber towels.
First step in detailing your engine is to start by removing any leaf's that might be stuck in the engine or in between the drain on the sides and the top of the engine. After you have removed all the large debris you will start covering the battery, air filter , and alternator with a plastic bag . You will also want to make sure that you cover an electrical connections that might be damaged by water. Most modern vehicle have engine bays that are waterproofed, so there is not much to cover on modern vehicles. For older vehicles you will want to make sure to cover any other important parts that might not be happy with getting water on them. Next step is to spray your degreaser or cleaner of choice and start to scrub and clean any of the plastics and areas with a lot of grime. After this you will mist the engine bay with water to wash off the chemical and grime, but you want to make sure to wash the engine carefully and with light pressure to prevent getting water into any unwanted areas. After you have cleaned the engine bay and have felt satisficed with your detailed cleaning, you will grab some microfiber towels and start to dry up all excess water that was left up on the engine. You can even use compressed air or a leaf blower to dry up the water, but make sure to not force any water into any unwanted areas. After this you will uncover the parts that you covered with a plastic bag and clean them up without water. Last step in the engine bay detail process is to grab your plastic protection of choice and apply it to all the plastics to keep shiny, nice, and protected from dirt and grime. |
